Hobbit News

I just found this article that gives the dates and titles for the upcoming Hobbit films. The first film, due out December 14, 2012, is called The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. The second, due out December 14, 2013, is called The Hobbit: There and Back Again.

It also gives most of the cast that has signed on. Orlando Bloom, Elijah Wood, Cate Blanchett, Ian McKellen, Christopher Lee and Hugo Weaving are all reprising their roles from the LOTR trilogy. Most of these are not in the book. I'm not quite sure how I feel about Peter Jackson adding these characters into the movie version. I understand that it will provide some continuity between the LOTR movies and this new movie but I also am a stickler for translating the book as accurately as possible to the screen.

What do you guys think about the adaptation of book to screen? Are you a purist or do you give lots of "artistic license" to directors?

Ok, so nothing coming out this week really intrigues me, so I found this one that is coming out in a couple weeks. Priest is based on a graphic novel and looks interesting. What do you think?

Game of Thrones on HBO

I've been seeing the previews for Game of Thrones on HBO for a few months now and thought I would read the book in preparation of the event. I must say that in the debut episode last night they did an admirable job of really sticking to the story from the book. This is by far my most anticipated show since Battlestar Galactica and so far...WOW! The characters are well cast and are being developed remarkably, especially for only one episode. This is a story of intrigue, betrayal, power (the struggle to get it, keep it or reclaim it). I can't wait for the next episode to air. If you haven't seen it, watch it on a re-brodcast. You will be hooked.

I really love this whole series. This is the umpeenth time I've read them and probably not the last. The Sorcerer's Stone is a great introduction to the magical world of Harry Potter. You realize from the opening chapter that evil is afoot. It is a solid storyline with many layers that should be developed as the books go on. Rowling does a wonderful job of giving out a little information on the events that precipitated the first chapter without giving us the whole picture.She also develops the characters in a way that shows you their personality without giving to much background, which leaves lots to be learned as we go along. The characters are all strongly written and I can honestly say I love the way they are all written, eventhough I may not like THEM very much. Eventhough she is a minor character in this book, Mrs. Weasley is my favorite in the Sorcerer's Stone. I love the way she just automatically "adopts" Harry because he has no one to care for him. The setting of Hogwarts and Diagon Alley is beautiful in its decription. Rowling has painted a picture that is beyond imagination. She is able to use her descriptions to make you feel as if you were there with the other students by the fire in the common room or on the Quidditch Pitch. I can't wait to continue on to year two in the Chamber of Secrets.
